The general consensus is that if you have less than three important items equipped (firearm, backpack, armor, helmet, rig) that you will be "Tagged & Cursed". I have experienced this, losing my kit several times and spawning in hoping for a come-up.

Pick a gun, start buying attachments to put on it, and have fun. There are a couple of mods that will allow you to put any attachment into any slot. Would recommend for a good time.After you get 1000 kills with a single gun, it'll unlock an attachment that lets you harvest the souls of people that you kill thus increasing stats randomly like damage, reload speed, and accuracy. You can basically scale your power in a single match by getting kills with the cursed attachment.
