HUDs don't affect performance, this test [www.teamfortress.tv] shows 1-3% FPS difference. However, the stock HUD covers a lot from the screen and has an unfriendly layout. Using a custom one is advised to have less visual clutter and they can have bonus features like showing the last damage and other health information.

Recently I've had a problem with my hud where a big chunk of the information (ammo, metal reserves, ubercharge) just randomly disappears after things like: rounds ending, swapping characters, changing teams, or side swaps it all started after downloading and applying a low resource cfg because God I love me a 15 year old shooter with memory leaks.A more modern take of the default hud.
