Numerous different classes can learn the lesser restoration spell early which will cure it a few points at a time and scrolls and potions for it are also sold by merchants. Look at the text log. Resting doesn't cure it, resting cures part of it. For example, if you're missing 5 strength, resting once might restore 2 STR (i think it's a roll) and so you'd have to sleep twice (or more) to get back to normal STR level. Yeah, the "permanent" modifier is a little unclear. Part of the issue is that Pathfinder (and DnD 3.5) are immense and very complex systems. Pathfinder is also a fair bit less forgiving than DnD. There's a lot of power to be squeezed out of character design and tactics... but to do that takes knowing the system pretty well.
