At the time it was manufactured, there was no +P. It was designed to shoot .38 Special as it was made in the 1950's. It would have been made in 1905-06. S&W made millions of these guns. In the condition you describe, it is worth between $200-300. Count the number of chambers on the revolver. The .38 Special CTG is a six-shooter. Measure the barrel and make sure it is six inches. Cross reference the serial number with Smith & Wesson's customer service (see Resources). Submit the serial number to the S&W service via email to confirm the firearm is indeed the .38 Special CTG. The early Model 60's were numbered in the Chiefs Special Series to 786544. Model 60 Serial number range 475001-480000 is usually a bright finish with case colored hammer and trigger as does the OP's. The OP's gun has the small S&W trademark on the left side. I think it is a .32 caliber with an 1880 patent printed on the top of the barrel. I have one that looks just like this S/N 83670 and I believe it is the Third Model .32 d.a. (1880-1919) which differed only slightly from the Second Model, except that the side walls of the trigger were made to cover the rear sear and cylinder stop.
