Mar 28, 2023 · Well, apparently all JL's have battery issues, thank you Jeep. We had problems with our JLU, replaced it with a JLURD. (Right now the JLU is having other JL issues - oil cooler, cam shaft, valves - about 1/2 of an engine swap). Since we got the JLURD, we then have virtually never used ESS - but still that little battery has caused headaches.
The 2nd battery is a true backup. No loads connected to it unless I need it to start the jeep and it is disconnected from the primary battery if the ignition is off. When ignition is on and alternator voltage is above 13.2 volts the backup battery is charging. Flip a switch to connect the backup battery and start the jeep.I have a 2022 Rub JL and Dealer, just installed the 3rd small battery and 2nd main battery. Assuming the amperage is correct any of them should work. Basically it disconnects the battery from the winch unless the solenoid is engaged. The aux wires obviously are not stout enough to power things like a winch or air compressor. I never bothered, just ran it to the battery.

Just to not overload the alternator.
Check your Tazer JL firmware version: if it is 11.3.7 it DOES have an issue that will drain your batteries. Update the Tazer to the latest version (11.4.1 now), and problem should go away. Also, don't forget to follow the "Full Reboot + 2 Sleep Cycles" procedure carefully and completely!! good luck.
The main battery must charge the auto start stop battery while its parked. I know I could easily turn off the system and save my self the headache but if the above is true it would seem a simple switch cut off to the second battery would be a simple permanent bypass that would be easy to install.
Right now the Aux battery is hooked up with the AAL 12v plug that plugs in the rear 12v outlet to keep it charged.
