This load was developed with the 1873 “Trapdoor” Springfield in mind, but is a great option for any rifle (or revolver) chambered in 45/70. IMR 3031 is said to be the most efficient powder for modern 45-70 loads. It is also about the easiest you can find at present. I bought it a both Bass Pro and Brownells this last year, I use it for many calibers. I use it for 300, 350 and 405 jacketed bullet loads.

H335 is an excellent powder and is my "go to" powder for my 52-55 gr jacketed bullet 223/5.56 loads along with 125 - 150 gr jacketed bullets in the 30-30 and 308Ws. With cast, H335 is excellent as long as you have the bullet mass and pressure level so it ignites and burns efficiently. With your 45-70 loads that's where you are.

The long range load for my C Sharps 45-70 is 27 grains of 5744 under a Lyman 457125 which weighs 525 in 20/1. My mold has been lapped to drop at .459". My Sharps likes boolits seated to touch the lands (2.95" LOA). 25-28 grains of 5744 should get you in the 1200-1300fps range. Just have to find the node for your rifle.

Hello, I have a 45/70 NEF handi rifle and a Lee loader for 45/70. My question is it list a load using 40.3 grs. IMR 4227 for bullet weights of 350 to 450 grs. ,will this rifle handle this load . I have IMR 4227, IMR 3031, and Varget. Would like to use 4227 , a faster burning powder. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. tfranklin7

If you load it to little you cause a high pressure problem, if you load it to much you cause a high pressure problem. Hodgdon does not even list a load with it. Triple Seven pellets under a sabot with a 250 gr. XTP, and I can regulate the .45-70 to hit the same POI as the Huntsman. Unique is my favorite powder for target and plinking loads in the 45-70, I usually use 13 grains with cast bullets 300-400. For hotter loads I use 2400 and for much hotter loads I use 4198 or RL7. Unique is dirty but very accurate and easy on the shoulder.

This is the only powder I used when loading my Colt in .44 Special and .44 Mag. The Lyman book I just picked up has loads for the 45-70 using 4227. Heres an example of pressure differences between 4227 and 322. For a 400 gr. cast and using 31.0 gr. of 4227, CUP pressure is 21,400.Still below the max load according to Nosler. For 405gr Lead heads I use 40gr max of H4198. My rifle is a Browning made Winchester 1886, capable of handling the same loads as the Marlin 1895.
