Jul 22, 2020 · To set the timing on that engine, have the s/plugs out, and have the throttle at full, set that timer base under the flywheel tight against the rubber stop on the end of the full spark timer advance stop screw (wire it against that stop if necessary). Rig a spark tester and have the gap set to 7/16". Hook up the timing light to the #1 plug wire.

The guy that got my motor running and rebuilt the carbs showed me a single screw on the starboard side that he said adjusts the idle. I'll post up any results.This is what i do to time my engine. I use the high idle lever to start it, then have to quickly switch into gear when I put the lever down or else it will shut down.Start engine and set the rpms to where it just stays running. In segments of 1/8 turns, start to turn the S/S needle valve in. Wait a few seconds for the engine to respond. As you turn the valve in, the rpms will increase. Initially the motor was not firing on the 3rd cylinder. The motor would get up on step and drop rpm and then it would kick in again. Very sporatic. There is good compression in all 3 cylinders. The spec in the book is not an absolute for idle but a starting point. How your motor idles has a lot to do with how deep it sits in the water ... The bolt at the high speed end goes though a hole so that end cannot really be adjusted. Re: 1995 Johnson 200HP carb adjustment. You adjust the timing by gauging how far the timer base moves. The timer base sets under the flywheel and an arm that protrudes out on the starboard side and is connected to the throttle lever by a link rod. The upper screw (what you called the trigger screw) is the timing adjustment screw.
